The Power of Food Rewards in Training

July 8, 2024 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Training a dog can be both a rewarding and challenging experience. One question that often sparks debate among dog trainers and pet owners alike is: Do you use food in training your dog? The responses are usually divided, with some embracing food as a valuable training tool and others shying away from it, believing it can cause overexcitement or simply doesn’t work for their dog. In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of using food rewards in dog training and introduce you to two powerful reward systems that can transform your training sessions.

My name is Duke Ferguson, and I’ve dedicated my career to professional dog training and high-performance coaching. With nearly four decades of experience, I’ve worked with canine professionals worldwide, guiding them through the intricacies of the NePoPo® system and certified high-performance coaching®.

Why Use Food Rewards?

Using food in dog training is more than just a method; it’s a way to engage, motivate, and build a strong relationship with your dog. Many trainers and pet owners appreciate the engagement and enthusiasm that food rewards bring to training sessions. When used correctly, food can be a powerful tool to enhance learning and make training more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

However, some believe that using food can lead to dependency or that it creates a false sense of obedience. These concerns often stem from misunderstandings about how to effectively incorporate food into training. Let’s address these misconceptions and learn how to use food rewards properly to maximize their benefits.

If you’re not currently using food in your training, then you’re missing out. Big time on productivity and you’re putting too much effort into it. I’m almost going to guarantee that because I got almost four decades of dog training. I’ve been doing this my whole life. I came from the old world. I was anti food.

The Two Reward Systems

In dog training, there are two pri reward systems: indirect rewards and direct rewards. Each system serves a unique purpose and can be tailored to achieve specific training goals.

  1. Indirect Rewards

Indirect rewards are not immediately visible to the dog. This method involves the dog working to hear a click or a release cue before receiving the reward. The food reward is not directly in front of the dog but is instead hidden, perhaps in your pocket or a cupboard. This system mirrors natural hunting behaviors, where animals work to find their food.

Using indirect rewards can create positive energy, increase dopamine levels, and foster heart-and-soul type behaviors where the dog is fully engaged and motivated. It’s particularly effective for building drive and enthusiasm in training. By keeping the reward unpredictable, you maintain the dog’s interest and focus, encouraging them to put forth their best effort.

  1. Direct Rewards

Direct rewards are visible and predictable. The dog knows exactly where the reward is and works directly for it. This method is beneficial for creating calm and stable behaviors. When a dog sees the reward and works towards it, the training becomes more straightforward and focused.

Direct rewards are excellent for teaching new behaviors, particularly in the initial stages. They help in maintaining calmness and stability, especially in distracting environments. This system can also be used for behaviors that require precision and consistency, as it provides clear and immediate feedback to the dog.

How to Make Food Rewards Work

One common issue trainers face is that dogs sometimes refuse food rewards. This can happen for various reasons, such as the dog not being hungry enough or the environment being too distracting. Here are some tips to overcome these challenges and make food rewards effective:

  • Build Ignition: A term NePoPo® trainers often use. It means Ensure your dog is motivated and eager to work for the reward hard enough. This involves creating a bit of hunger and desire. Don’t give food for free in a bowl; instead, use training sessions as opportunities for your dog to earn their food.
  • Be Unpredictable: Especially with indirect rewards, keep the dog guessing. This unpredictability can heighten their interest and engagement in the training process. Quality and quantity unknown.
  • Phase It In: Start with high rates of reinforcement to build the behavior, then gradually phase out the frequency of rewards. This approach helps to maintain the behavior without constant reinforcement.

Choosing the Right System

The choice between direct and indirect rewards depends on your training goals and the specific behaviors you are working on. For creating calmness and stability, direct predictable rewards are your go-to. For building drive, enthusiasm, and active engagement, indirect rewards are more suitable. Often, a combination of both systems is necessary to achieve a well-rounded and balanced training program.

Conclusion

Food rewards, when used correctly, can significantly enhance your dog training efforts. By understanding and implementing the principles of direct and indirect rewards, you can unleash your dog’s full potential, making training sessions more productive, enjoyable, and effective. Whether you’re a professional trainer or a pet owner, these techniques offer valuable insights into building a strong, positive relationship with your dog.

DESTRUCTIVE DOGS OFTEN MISDIAGNOSED AS SEPARATION ANXIETY

DESTRUCTIVE DOGS OFTEN MISDIAGNOSED AS SEPARATION ANXIETY CASES

I get a lot of emails and phone calls to help people who say their dog has separation anxiety. Some have been prescribed anxiety meds. This is why we do 45-60 minute free consultations and assessments. I will spend more time with you then most experts asking many questions about your dog’s history, breeding, development, their habits, their responses to stimuli, your habits, your routines, environmental changes, food being fed, physical and mental stimulation, your work schedule, travel life etc.

After finding all of that out, quite often it is not a case of separation anxiety but a case of destructive behaviour due to boredom and lack of stimulation. That is why your anxiety meds aren’t working. 😉

If your dog lacks mental and physical stimulation they tend to seek out their own “tasks.”  They need an outlet for their energy and if no outlet is provided they engage in destructive behaviour to vent out the energy.

In this instance, I will likely not recommend meds for your dog but here is what I will recommend:

🐶 MENTAL & PHYSICAL ENERGY BURN. Engage with your dog with fun and challenging interactions doing obedience training games everyday. Make their new daily “tasks” fun and engaging.  Sit, down, heel, place, come, stand, stay in position and other fun tricks that they can problem solve and be active in are important.  Challenge them to learn how to do it without relying on lures or bribes, instead create a thinking dog who can problem solve, find their advantage and think they are in control.

🐶 No more leaving them alone to exercise themselves mindlessly on your property. YOU exercise them. YOU engage them daily with fun activities such as fetch, tug, flirt pole use, walks, runs, bike rides, swimming and nose work.  YOU supervising and engaging with your dog. They will love it and you at a deeper level.  Why doesn’t a dog listen to its owner? Because often the owner is boring, not present, not engaged, not reliable and the most common word spoken is “no!” Be the cool kid in school that your dog wants to hang out with.

🐶 Teach your dog to have an off switch. Many owners focus on constantly stimulating their dogs with play, enrichment and exercise. This is great and please don’t stop! But the problem with that alone is, it can create adrenaline junkies who can not sit still and always need to be doing something. Teach down-stays on ‘place’ and reward calm behaviour. Make sure they are getting proper sleep. Adult dogs need 12-14 hours a day of sleep. Like kids, your dog might choose not to rest. Make them rest by using a kennel or teaching place command after their Energy Burn needs have been met. Destructive behaviours increase with lack of sleep.

🐶 Feed them nutritious healthy food. Not all food is created equal and just because your bag costs $100 doesn’t guarantee it’s good for them. Dog food companies are masters of marketing and masters of making you think their food is natural and healthy when it is not. It’s our job as pet parents to know exactly what we are buying and feeding our dogs. Poor food choices can hinder brain function and contribute to aggression and destructive behaviours. Links below for websites you should study.

🐶 And lastly, take action. Mike Hawkins from Planet of Success says-

“ You don’t get results by focusing on the results, you get results by focusing on the actions that produce results.”

Dog training is a lifestyle. Set intentions to work with your dog every day and teach them what you expect with fun, food and engagement. Those intentions will turn into habits and those habits will then become second nature. Your dog is only on this earth for a short while. Don’t waste the opportunity. ❤️

Love,

Coach Sara

German Shepherd Puppy Training: Proven Results In Only 2 Lessons With UPK9

May 2, 2012 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Testimonial from one of our newest Ultimate Obedience Clients

Dear Duke,

Paul and I wanted you to know how happy we are with the progress of our German Shepherd puppy, Ava, under your care, attention and training. We brought her to you only three short weeks ago. She was completely untrained, and I think we even described her to you as ‘wild’!  She was close to four months old when we got her and we brought her to you two weeks later.
With only three weeks training of one night a week, she’s like a new puppy!!

Her behavior has improved one hundred fold and she’s a pleasure to have in our family now.

Thank you so much for your kind, caring but firm training method. We look forward to continuing to teach Ava to be a well mannered family pet and look forward to our weekly classes.  We love her dearly and we’re so happy she’s learning to be a well mannered companion that’s lots of fun to have in our family.

Thanks again,

Rosie O’Malley-Keyes

Proven Results!! Siberian Husky trained to walk nicely on a leash with UPK9: Testimonial

Proven Results!! Siberian Husky trained to walk nicely on a leash with UPK9: Testimonial

Another Happy Client in just One dog training  Lesson with Unleashed Potential!

Check out this Testimonial for one of our UPK9 Dog trainers!

Hi my name is John and I wanted to share a little about my unbelievable experience while training with Unleashed Potential dog training.

I recently adopted a seven year old Siberian Husky from a Husky rescue organization in Nova Scotia. The rescue organization told me when I adopted her that she was a lead dog on a sled team. This has made it impossible to walk her.

Regardless of what method or tools I used, I could not seem to stop her from pulling. I even tried a gentle leader that came highly recommended by a local pet store, however this actually seemed to make her pull even worse. No matter what I tried she would pull me, like she was pulling a sled.

After just ONE lesson with, a professional dog trainer from Unleashed Potential, I now have the problem 95% under control.

We are very happy with the service, this has allowed us to enjoy our dog more fully, and we highly recommend  Unleashed Potential to anyone we can!!

Proven Results: Only One Dog Training Lesson With Unleashed Potential

February 7, 2012 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

I always Love to see the look on peoples faces when they come for their first lesson and they are amazed in how much success they get in just the first 10 – 20 minutes especially if they have seen other dog trainers. It is a part of my job that I love!

Here is an email I got from our last nights lesson. See below:

“Last night was our first dog training lesson at Unleashed Potential K9 training In Stratford PEI with Duke Ferguson, and it was a HUGE SUCCESS!! 🙂
We went into last night with a dog who pulled on his leash, followed his hound nose and didn’t always come when he was called. The dog we left with after the lesson would stay by your side, responded when you said his name and came when he was called. He responded very well to Duke and his methods of training.
We have had Desmond for almost 2 years and have tried a couple different trainers trying to find the right fit for us, our dog and what he responds to.  Last night consultation/lesson was the first time Desmond responded to and worked with someone other than my husband and I, he always seemed timid of other trainers but with Duke, Desmond warmed  up to him quickly and we were able to start our training right away and didn’t have to wait for Desmond to adjust to another human.
We found last night very informative, and can’t wait to go back to our next lesson.  We are looking forward to having a dog we can take with us where ever we go and not have to worry about him misbehaving around strangers and eventually children in and out of our home. Thank You Duke!! “
