Training A German Shorthaired Pointer

August 28, 2013 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Ina, my 3-year-old GSP (German shorthaired pointer), is an energy packed dog who will run around outside all day long and not crash until the sun is down. Since having her as an 8-week-old puppy, she has always been somewhat obedient, but I INAalways knew she wasn’t reaching her full potential. Ina is easily distracted from everything to grasshoppers, butterflies, and especially birds. I always struggled with Ina focusing on me, no matter what environment she was in. I consider myself an active person and I have always enjoyed having her off-leash to play fetch or to go on long hikes at Kejimkujik National Park. However, Ina was very hard to control on a leash and I started to avoid taking her to new environments where I knew she would be easily excited and distracted. Trips to a new park or even to the vet were things I started to dread. No matter what I tried and how long our walks were, I could never get her to stop pulling on her leash. I knew that the obedience issues I was facing with her were taking away from both her life and mine.

I had always been on the search for knowledgeable and qualified dog trainers along the South Shore, but I never found anyone that came with raving reviews. By chance I stumbled upon Unleashed Potential . I loved everything! I read about their dog obedience services and opted to give it a try. Since I started working with Unleashed Potential I have seen a huge transformation in Ina. I am now able to enjoy my dog much more than I ever have before. The training was beyond my expectations.  Heeling was something that I never thought I could possibly get Ina to do. However, I can now take Ina for a walk and even a run with her heeling, no matter what insects or animals are around, or who we come across.  Ina is focused on me and will recall even with distractions. The dread of not being able to control Ina when she is excited in a new environment is now a thing of the past. Ina and I now enjoy trips to the lake and long walks together on and off leash. Ina is living her life to the fullest now that her potential has been unleashed!

Thank you Unleashed Potential!

Kaila and Ina

A Tired Dog is a Good Dog!

June 19, 2013 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

A lot of people come to us with questions about tiring out their dogs.
First off, we will put in place two distinctions: if your dog is worked up in a comfortable/familiar environment this signals pent up energy that needs to be exerted — If your dog is worked up in an unfamiliar environment this is normal, more exposure and training might be needed!

Elvis

Regardless of the surroundings, mental stimulation is key to tiring out a dog; making them work for the things they like as rewards would always aid in such stimulation. I have something the dog WANTS, he must work to get it!

Think of it this way: someone who goes to work and does mental work with numbers all day or a student who studies all day would come home completely wiped from using their brain all day – even though they didn’t move much or perform physical tasks – mental exhaustion is just as tough if not tougher than physical. Compare this person to a marathon runner who can get in a mental zone and keep pushing their body. They would come home feeling pretty good about the run and not totally drained. Give this person math questions to do while running and the run is MUCH more tiresome! This is what happens when playing fetch, just running after the ball will tire a dog out briefly, but they always want another!!Instead, we balance the play – a little mental work and a lot of fun can go a long way! Once obedience is instilled we can call up on it for play time and tire a dog that could normally fetch a ball all day in twenty minutes. This is why mental stimulation and forcing the dog to use their brain and think is important and our GO TO technique for a dog with pent up energy. Check out this facebook video of Roxie and Becky Herman (South Shore NS, Trainer) for a perfect example on mental stimulation and reward fetching!

When time is lacking for mental stimulation we can call up on other techniques to tire the dog (just to name a few) :

– teach your dog to play tug! A firm out command is a must as well as certain rules to the game!
– resistance training with a harness and weights, old tire: check out this video: Facebook Resistance Training Video or this one Facebook Resistance Video 919179_516979565015991_690669015_o
–
heeling dog while you jog, run, bike or walk
– teach the dog to “find” their toys
– teach your dog to “hunt” for their food
– swimming for their toys
– resistance training in water

There are so many options out there for owners and their dogs to experience life together, have some fun and get out with your dog!
If you or anyone you know has a dog that is need of some excess energy burnoff, training or additional techniques please don’t hesitate to contact one of our certified trainers!

A Program For Life for our German Shepherd Puppy: UPK9 PEI

April 23, 2013 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

A Program For Life for our German Shepherd Puppy: UPK9 PEI

Riley

When my wife and I decided to get a German Shepherd puppy we were concerned that owning such a powerful breed could be dangerous if not properly trained.  We knew that neither of us had the skills to raise this kind of breed, and we really wanted to own one, so we asked around and Duke Ferguson’s name came up several times as the person we should speak to.  After our initial visit with him, it was clear that Duke’s balanced approach and training philosophy were exactly what we were looking for so we enrolled Riley in Puppy Management class when he was 8 weeks old.

Starting with Unleashed Potential K9’s foundation in puppy classes we learned the basics of how dogs learned, how to communicate and how to motivate our pup, Riley.  We were able to apply the techniques right away to start teaching Riley to sit, down, walk on a loose leash, come, place and other commands. We forged a strong trust and bond with Riley and he quickly responded to our basic commands.

After our 20 weeks in Puppy Management class, we decided to keep up with training and enrolled him in the Ultimate Obedience classes. At first, we were a little leery of e-collars as we weren’t familiar with them but Duke explained that they are not a tool for disobedience — but rather a communication device to get the dog’s attention so he would listen to our commands and he went on to demonstrate how they worked and let us feel it in the free consultation!

Riley is now 2 years old and still goes to weekly Saturday classes to socialize with other dogs and to reinforce the training we’ve learned together.  He can walk both on or off-leash and he follows our every command. He is a well-adjusted, happy dog and very socialized with all breeds of dogs as well as with adults and children. In fact, we have to stop our two-year-old grandson from crawling all over him.  Riley has so much patience with him, thanks to the training we received from Duke.

Unleashed Potential is more than just dog training. Duke and Lindsay are always available for questions and advice. They are always ready with positive feedback and are always ready to lend a hand. We take advantage of the other services they offer, from supplies and goodies to the indoor pool to maintenance board and trains. Leaving Riley with them, two years in a row when we went on vacation, was a great relief for us.  We knew that he would be well taken care of and would get plenty of exercises, both in the pool, out with other dogs, and maintain his training!

We are very pleased with Unleashed Potential K9’s training methods and highly recommend all of their services to anyone who wants a well-mannered family pet. Duke and Lindsay are amazing and Riley is proof of that!

Testimonial: UPK9 Worldwide Dog Training CONSULTS ! “VIDA” GSD

April 9, 2013 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Testimonial: UPK9 Worldwide Dog Training Consults!

Finding and contacting  Duke Ferguson at Unleashed Potential for dog training on the internet was a life changer for me as I was nearly at the end of my tether. My husband and I have a young german shepherd which we have trained from a puppy and having had other german shepherds presumed things would go forward in the normal way, but we were wrong.  Vida was a challenge from the start.

Online Skype Dog Training For The United Kingdom and World Wide

Hyper, high drive and over the top behaviour from a baby. Never seemed to be able to relax, unable to control herself, pulling, lunging, jumping with excitement when meeting and greeting other dogs and people (very friendly) over the top with excitability and energy and yes, she got plenty of exercise.   In fact, I wish I knew then what I know now that the frequent advice from well-meaning people including most trainers that a tired dog is a well-behaved dog is not applicable to all dogs, they just get fitter and are still hyper and raring to go!  Tried all sorts of collars, halters, natural calming remedies etc with no success.  I could go on and on.  It was exhausting and very frustrating.

I had not considered an e collar as they get very bad press in the UK and I asked a trainer if they thought it might be worth trying and was told that I should NOT consider using one.  I then started looking on the web to find a site that might give me more information.

Success in Coaching and Training with Online Videos

We live in the U.K. so when I saw Duke’s website I nearly didn’t contact him because I thought he may not want to get involved due to the obvious distance but thank goodness I did. I purchased an e-collar and some training videos from him. as well as doing some Skype consults one-on-one.  His training methods combined with this collar are great! He uses it in a way to encourage correct behaviour in all aspects of training, it was a real eye-opener for me.

The result was that his advice very soon produced results with our dog and I cannot thank him enough! Duke is an excellent trainer and I would recommend anyone with a problem dog to contact him, wherever in the world they live! You will get great results and service.

What if the thing triggering you most isn't here to punish you, but to teach you?
