E-Collar Training A Reactive Dog

March 10, 2022 By Sara Bryanton Leave a Comment

E-Collar training a reactive dog is never an easy task to take on, however, Finnigan’s family was ready to commit.

We are so proud of this family and the amount of effort they put into training their dog. Their dedication was truly inspiring and completely changed their lives as well as Finnigan’s.

E-Collar Training a Reactive Dog

“The best thing I ever did was go to Unleashed Potential for training our Chocolate Lab, Finnigan.

I was against the e-collar for a long time until it was explained and demonstrated to me. This saved my dog’s life multiple times.

He would dart for the road when someone or something would go by and by using proper commands, along with the e-collar and rewards, we were able to keep him safe.

Our dog loved training and you could see the confidence grow in him along with myself as we learned together.

I think that the best thing you can do for your dog is get them into training so that they can live up to their full potential and you can enjoy your new addition to your family.

I have learned that dogs love to work and they are very happy when doing so!

Thank you Sara for helping me get Finnigan’s behavior to a better place and helping us have the confidence to tackle the fear aggression he had.

Forever grateful.”

– Owner Lisa

Happy Pitbull on E-Collar

March 7, 2022 By Sara Bryanton Leave a Comment

E-Collar Training Bella the Pitbull Mix.

We are so proud of Brittany and her dedication to her dog’s training! They have both come such a long way and the success they continue to strive for is inspiring.

Pitbull Mix on E-Collar

“Training at Unleashed Potential has changed not only my life but Bella’s.

Before training, I remember crying. I cried so much because I just didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I still lived with my parents and they never experienced a dog like Bella either. She was a handful but she was also the sweetest, most loving, and cuddly dog. She had many issues: counter surfing, jumping, no recall, pulling when walking, no bite inhibition, no boundaries with our senior family dog and the family cat, didn’t listen or connect with me outside, and the list went on. When I sit and think about what she did that was amazing and easy before our training, all that comes to mind (aside from being the sweetest, loving, and cuddly girl) was not peeing or pooping in the house.

With training, the following changed:

  • She learned boundaries. Our senior dog was able to eat in peace without Bella bombarding her way in.
  • I could recall her. We could go in the fields with a ball and play. She would come back when called. We could go on hikes off-leash. I finally had off-leash control on her.
  • The counter-surfing stopped.
  • The jumping stopped.
  • Leash walking improved. She focused on me finally. This was big. She is part beagle and when the nose went down, it was like I was dead to her, but not anymore.

Now, I won’t lie- I like to keep it real. Bella still has some issues and she has developed new issues over the years. I blame myself because I didn’t stay on top of her training. I slacked off. But with each new issue, I always had Sara to help us and I am forever grateful for her! Bella is a good girl. She is not perfect, but she has come such a long way over the years. We both have.

I was never a perfect dog mom and I’m still not, but I am way more confident with handling Bella than I was before e-collar training. I know it can be scary to use an e-collar for the first time but once you see the positive reaction from it, you’ll realize it’s not scary. The e-collar is not used for punishment and they (Unleashed Potential) teach you how to use it. The e-collar is used for positive things like recalling back to you, sitting, etc. which ends with a reward. The e-collar is also used for corrections like jumping, counter surfing, etc.

I cannot recommend Unleashed Potential enough. The training is life-changing and beyond helpful. If you are wondering if training with them is right for you, the answer is yes. 100000 times yes!!!”

PUPPY SOCIALIZATION | Building Confidence in Your Dog

March 4, 2022 By Duke Ferguson 2 Comments

A 5-Step Puppy Socialization Exercise to Build More Confidence in Your Dog!

If you’re looking for ways to socialize and build confidence in your puppy or an older dog of any age, then this video is for you. Watch as I take you inside one of my private training sessions and introduce you to a very powerful, next-level socialization exercise that many quality working kennels will do with their dogs.  You’ll see a vibrant 16-week old pitbull puppy named Echo as she goes through all of the steps that I’m going to teach you.  This is the first time she will experience this form of socialization.

I’ll teach five levels that you can add on and keep the momentum going as your dog becomes more and more confident. This puppy socialization exercise is very simple and very fun. It is also an extremely powerful way to have your dog learn to try hard on its own and become more confident.

Steps to Socialize Your Puppy

puppy in empty kiddie pool

Step 1:  Introduce the kiddie pool or something that can contain bottles or other safe objects.   The pool is empty at this point, you just want your puppy to experience the difference in texture and sound. We let the dog explore with a loose leash. Drop pieces of kibble or high-value treats in the pool as your dog is in it. Make it a great place to be!

Step 2: Let your puppy jump out and add some empty water bottles to the pool making sure to leave lots of empty space.   As your dog jumps in, drop in more pieces of kibble, let your dog search around for the food. The sound of the moving bottles will be a different experience and this is part of socialization. The food is a reward and the dog learns to overcome the stress of the moving bottles.

Step 3:  Add even more water bottles to the pool.  Enough that the dog must push through some bottles in order to get the food.

Step 4:  As your dog is searching for food, tap the side of the pool to add some distraction and offer reassurance through some gentle petting and praise through touch. This helps build confidence because you as the handler are giving that support in this new environment.

Step 5:  The last step of this exercise to build confidence in your dog is to move around the bottles as they search for the food.  In this case, I’m using a stick to move around bottles and randomly tap the pool.  This is another form of distraction and it socializes the dog to all sorts of sounds, textures, and situations.

Big Dog in Kid Pool

This can be done with older dogs too, it’s a great way to develop that trusting relationship between you and your dog.  It’s our hope that this video will help you think of other ways you can socialize your dog.  Get creative and remember always start off slowly and add another level as your dog is comfortable.  Use these exercises as an opportunity to train your dog using his kibble as a reward.  Throw that food dish away and get a treat pouch and feed your dog while you train!

Reactive Dog No More!

February 10, 2022 By Sara Bryanton Leave a Comment

One of our Vet Student clients came to us with her reactive dog, Indie, a couple of months ago. They both learned a ton during their lessons and have been on a road to success ever since! The amount of hard work this client put into her dogs training truly shows and we couldn’t be more proud!

Reactive Dog No More!

“We had our first group obedience class this weekend!

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous going into it. I hadn’t really trained Indie all week due to studying and patient care at school and there would be quite a few dogs present, so I wasn’t sure how it would go.

But as usual, she blew me away. Indie didn’t have one single reaction at group class – she was focused, calm and so dang good, even with other excitable dogs and other dogs working around her. We were able to participate in all of the drills with the other dogs, including weaving through them and their handlers and walking past them.

If you would have told me that we would be able to do this a couple of months ago, I would have laughed. If you have a reactive dog and are struggling – reach out to a trainer. It was the best decision that I made – they helped me with things I couldn’t see, taught me how to handle situations, and continuously supported us through the process. So do better for your dog, do better for you. It’s a hell of a lot of work, but I promise you it is so worth it to see your dog learn that life isn’t so scary and to give you the confidence to help them navigate the world.“

Place and Recall Training Success with Rescue Dog!

February 8, 2022 By Sara Bryanton Leave a Comment

Place and Recall Training has helped Taco the Texas Rescue live his best life! He and his owner worked, and continue to work, very hard on his training every day. Read below what Taco’s owner had to say about a recent successful outing.
Rescue Dog Standing
“Some huge training wins this morning!
Tacos recall has improved so much with our recent training and incorporating a “place” command. We started playing a game of getting him to place on various steps of the bleachers! Even with dogs running by, he held his position (with the cutest head tilt) until he was released.”
