Do Dogs Forget Obedience They Have Learned?

Once in a while I hear people say, “ I did obedience with my dog but he forgets it all now”. This is a statement that makes me shake my head.

I don’t believe this to be true. I believe if you train your dog to fully understand a name to a behaviour then they don’t completely forget it.

Over time, like us, if you don’t use it you loose it. They will get sloppy and they will refuse BUT They don’t completely forget it.

Watch the video of Duke Ferguson working with his dog Nitro after a few months of being “Off Work”.

Running Attacks With Belgian Malinois “NITRO”

Nitro is a Belgian Malinois. He is Duke Ferguson’s personal dog.

This video shows one of Nitro’s favourite things to do. You will notice in the video that Nitro still listens to Duke’s commands. It does not matter how bad he wants to go after the bite suit, he still obeys.

Obedience creates safety and sanity.

The Doodle Who Ate Everything! Testimonial

My dog, Victor, has had 5 surgeries. Victor is a two-year-old labradoodle. His surgeries were related to him eating things.

I brought Victor to Unleashed Potential to correct his behaviour. Since being at Unleashed Potential the results are incredible!

Duke taught me to take control of Victor and not give up on him.

I was scared to take Victor anywhere. It was embarrassing for me as a dog owner to be seen in public with him as he was out of control.

Victor is now sitting and staying with me. He doesn’t eat anything nor does he run away when he sees other dogs. He is a changed dog because of the training received from Unleashed Potential.

I want to thank you Duke for the time you took to teach both Victor and me.

Creating a Positive Association to All Training Tools Including E collars and Pinch Collars

There is a saying in the dog training world ” Make training and rehabilitation fun”. In a perfect world this is very true. Training should be fun, but this is not a perfect world and many dogs develop issues from it and…… who has fun in rehab in the beginning anyway?

Take the beginning stages of working with a dog who has major fear issues from poor training or being abused in its past OR working with a spoiled rotten humanized dog who has ” spoiled rich kid “Syndrome that has developed undesired behaviours because of no rules, no leadership, Free food, sleeping in the owners bed ect…

Is training going to be fun in the beginning for them? Not likely.

Ive seen dogs get stressed out for a couple days initially by just having the owners spend more time with the dog teaching it to learn new things and work for its meals instead of it getting the food for free in the dish.

Training should be fun and yes, rehab can be stressful in the beginning, but not so much that the dog cant handle it.

Working the dog step by step through its issues to create an end result where the dog is happy and obedient I feel is very important. Its easy to get compliance and have a dog do something or stop a dog from doing something… but get them to enjoy it….. in my eyes this is equally important.
