Aggressive dog training

It’s OK, He’s Friendly

April 21, 2015 By Guy Lapierre Leave a Comment

How is this meeting going?
How is this meeting going?

“It’s okay….he’s friendly!!”

Let’s discuss the importance of Off-Leash Recall. How many times have you heard an owner yelling that out to you from afar as his off leash dog runs towards you full tilt while ignoring all his owners attempts to call him back? Often the dogs name is repeated over and over and over, the word “treat” is thrown in for good measure and there’s a hint of desperation in the tone as their dog gets closer and closer.

If you are walking a dog with on leash reactivity or on leash aggression, you already know what is horribly wrong with this picture. You also probably know full well that at this point, it really doesn’t matter if the dog is friendly or not.

If you are “that guy yelling at your dog as he charges towards me and my on leash dog”, let me explain why this is totally unacceptable. Sure, accidents happen, dogs get out and go for a runabout around the neighbourhood…this isn’t the type of scenario I’m referring to. This isn’t a loose dog that someone is trying to catch,…I’m referring to the person who purposely un-clips that leash and allows their dog off leash when they don’t have reliable recall. I’m sure you’ve seen them at the park, I know I have run into my fair share walking through Point Pleasant. This post also isn’t about where you can legally let your dog off leash,…you are responsible for your dog whether the area is designated off leash or not. This is about being in control of your dog if you allow them off leash. Even in designated off leash areas you must be in control of your dog at all times. It is the law. The off leash areas are not “anything goes” areas (although judging by what I’ve witnessed on different occasions you’d think they were). You should be able to call your dog back to you, and leash them, if necessary. If you can’t, your dog should not be off leash and the reason being is that the on leash dog that your dog is running towards may not react well to an unleashed dog coming into their space.

Dogs have 3 options when approached by another dog…

  1. they can submit (accept the dog in their space and sometimes put up with socially awkward or forced greetings). Not all dogs know how to properly meet other dogs.
  2. they can fight. If a dog feels threatened, they are likely to choose this option. (for dogs that have already had a bad on leash experience with another dog, they may have already developed on-leash reactivity or even on-leash aggression)
  3. or then can flee (i.e. avoidance, run away from the dog that is making them uncomfortable) This is not an option for an on leash dog.

If the dog that your off leash dog is running up to is on leash, they now only have 2 choices on how to handle the situation because the leash prevents the flight option. They can either fight or they can submit. Chances are good that you’ve seen a totally submissive dog before….they’re the dog that drops to the ground and rolls over the second a new dog approaches it. In this situation I really hope that the “friendly dog” really is friendly, because a bad experience can change that submissive dog into a reactive dog in a heartbeat.

Is this playtime or fight time?
Is this playtime or fight time?

For dogs that have already had a bad on leash experience with another dog (i.e. leash reactive/on leash aggressive dogs), this scenario can go terribly wrong. A dog that feels threatened while on leash may not wait to see if the approaching dog is going to hurt them, they may defend themselves right away and lash out. This is when fights happen…. totally unavoidable fights between two dogs that should have never met.
This is why it is so important to establish reliable recall before un-clipping that leash and allowing your dog to run.

We’ll assume for the purpose of this post that only “friendly dogs” are being let off lead (although I know for a fact that it is not always the case).

You should be able to call your dog away from an on leash dog that is walking with it’s owner. If you can’t, your dog shouldn’t be off leash.
If you cannot keep your dog in sight and under control, they should not be off leash. (We’ve encountered many “ownerless” dogs in the park).
If you cannot keep track of your dog because you are deep in conversation, (either on or off the phone), your dog shouldn’t be off leash.

This all applies to dogs running up to people without dogs as well. A lot of people enjoy walking in public parks, but that doesn’t mean that they have to put up with being accosted by off leash dogs jumping all over them. This may be common place in actual dog parks, but parks with off leash areas are not “dog parks”, they are for everyone’s enjoyment. It boils down to being respectful of other people and other dogs and doing your part to ensure that your dog and the other dogs you may encounter can be safely exercised whether they are on leash or off leash.

Please….be a responsible dog owner, because even a “friendly dog” can get himself into trouble.

If you want complete off leash control with your dog, including reliable recall, contact me today to discuss your training options.

Hamlet, Great Dane OFF LEASH and going everywhere with Unleashed Potential Ultimate Obedience!!

It’s hard to find the words to describe what  Unleashed Potential K9 in PEI has done for me and my Great Dane.

Hamlet is a timid and shy dog, and I went to Unleashed Potential looking for help, hoping to build his confidence and mine. The first session we had  opened my eyes to the possibilities of what Hamlet and I could accomplish together. Since then,we have been  educated, challenged  and given so many new tools we are able to put in to practice everywhere we go.

We arrived at each session eager to learn more.  Our trainer’s enthusiasm for dogs and their people is contagious. Her talent and knowledge is something I’m grateful she shared with me. I will never forget all she’s done for Hamlet and I, and would recommend Unleashed Potential K9 to anyone looking for help with their dog.

Training A German Shorthaired Pointer

August 28, 2013 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Ina, my 3-year-old GSP (German shorthaired pointer), is an energy packed dog who will run around outside all day long and not crash until the sun is down. Since having her as an 8-week-old puppy, she has always been somewhat obedient, but I INAalways knew she wasn’t reaching her full potential. Ina is easily distracted from everything to grasshoppers, butterflies, and especially birds. I always struggled with Ina focusing on me, no matter what environment she was in. I consider myself an active person and I have always enjoyed having her off-leash to play fetch or to go on long hikes at Kejimkujik National Park. However, Ina was very hard to control on a leash and I started to avoid taking her to new environments where I knew she would be easily excited and distracted. Trips to a new park or even to the vet were things I started to dread. No matter what I tried and how long our walks were, I could never get her to stop pulling on her leash. I knew that the obedience issues I was facing with her were taking away from both her life and mine.

I had always been on the search for knowledgeable and qualified dog trainers along the South Shore, but I never found anyone that came with raving reviews. By chance I stumbled upon Unleashed Potential . I loved everything! I read about their dog obedience services and opted to give it a try. Since I started working with Unleashed Potential I have seen a huge transformation in Ina. I am now able to enjoy my dog much more than I ever have before. The training was beyond my expectations.  Heeling was something that I never thought I could possibly get Ina to do. However, I can now take Ina for a walk and even a run with her heeling, no matter what insects or animals are around, or who we come across.  Ina is focused on me and will recall even with distractions. The dread of not being able to control Ina when she is excited in a new environment is now a thing of the past. Ina and I now enjoy trips to the lake and long walks together on and off leash. Ina is living her life to the fullest now that her potential has been unleashed!

Thank you Unleashed Potential!

Kaila and Ina

Young Boxer’s Amazing Transformation!

June 18, 2013 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Finn the boxer, trained by Ted Efthymiadis of Unleashed Potential.

Young Boxer’s Amazing Transformation!

My boxer, Finnegan is the joy of my life. He is a goofy boy that makes me laugh every day. He loves to cuddle and just be with me. I bring him to the office everyday and anywhere else I go. Being a boxer, he was extremely excitable, he jumped on people, knocking them over. He’s given people cuts and bruises and kids were bowling pins, how many could he knock down. Since he turned one he became very dominant and aggressive towards other dogs. I had no control over him. We walked in point pleasant park every day and it started to turn into a nightmare.  Another co-worker brought her dog into the office and it turned into a really nasty dog fight. I jumped in and got them apart. I was so lucky that no one was hurt, including myself!

I started looking up dog trainers online and found Unleashed Potential. I watched all their videos and read all their testimonials. I had more problems with Finnegan than I realized. I wanted a dog that I could bring everywhere. I love hiking and walking in the park. Right then, I could not do any of that.

I called  and had the free evaluation. I was amazed. He had more control over my dog than I did and they just met. After meeting his dogs and watching all the videos of previous clients on his website. I knew he was the best. I wasn’t going to go with just any trainer.

Since training, I have the most amazing dog! I can now take him everywhere with no worries. I went from not trusting my dog to trusting him 100%.  His social skills are amazing. He has turned into a chameleon. He adjusts his play with old, young, disabled and small dogs.  If I don’t want him to say hi to a certain dog all I have to do is say “heel” and we walk right by. It has been 6 months and no fighting with other dogs. I get at least 2-3 dogs a week in the park that lunge at him and try to fight. The look on his face is priceless, “Mom, that dog is crazy!”. He always walks away from fights and comes to me for protection. He is now great with kids and doesn’t knock them over. He’s extremely gentle with my 6 month old nephew, and I have complete trust in him with the baby.

We attend group class regularly for maintenance and I have met some really great people. Finnegan has made some great doggie friends. He even plays with another boxer from class that he tried to attack multiple times before! It is such an awesome feeling to see your dog completely change. Every day he does something that makes me proud of him. And every day I have complete strangers compliment on how well trained he is! Our lives have completely changed for the better because of  Unleashed Potential 🙂

I can’t thank you enough!

Tara Finnegan in Halifax Nova Scotia.
