Unleashed Potential K9- The Valley

Bear and Gunner Together Successfully! UPK9 Dog Training Success Story!

June 14, 2019 By Duke Ferguson 2 Comments

Bear and Gunner

Bear and Gunner trained with Unleashed Potential K9 because they would fight with each other in the same home, with no known trigger. Their owners were living a stressed out life with a baby on the way, managing two dogs that they were too afraid to have out together. Once we determined that their trigger was resources, we were able to start rehabbing their relationship. Apart from that, Gunner used to act extremely fearful when people would come to the house, refusing to socialize. After 4 private lessons and 3 weeks of Boarding and Training, here is what their owner, Jasmine, had to say.

“Major breakthrough, have to share.

We have people over for a regular poker night. Normally Bear would be downstairs with the guys and Gunner would be in the bedroom before anyone even showed up because he would lose it and bark out of major fear. That’s where he’d spend the night. I’d tried to bring him downstairs before but there was too many people, he’d bark and run away.

Tonight…..

I left Bear in the kennel and put Gunner on Place. Our first friend arrived and Gunner didn’t bark, he was happy. Eventually we broke him and he smelled our friend and didn’t seem too bothered. People arrived one by one which worked great, it gave Gunner time to see them and they all knew better than to try to approach him because that was the closest they’d ever gotten to him!

To make a long story short (sorry but I’m flabbergasted)… he didn’t bark once at anyone and didn’t run away. He even wagged his tail when a few people petted him carefully and gave him treats.

We got Bear out and placed them both. I went even a step further and brought him down to the poker room and this is where I was mind blown…He came in and walked around the table wagging his tail! Being normal. First time he ever went in the basement during a poker night, and he was comfortable and not sketched out. Some of these guys had never even seen Gunner because he was always hiding, and Bear did amazing too! He let Gunner do his thing and didn’t bother him, he was calm and obedient and respectful. Bear is getting some bed time with the guys and I’m with gunner upstairs on bed so they can each relax. ”

Ahhhhhh success!

Out of Control Lab, Ginger- Testimonial

November 3, 2017 By Duke Ferguson 1 Comment

Thank You Unleashed Potential The Valley!! Ginger the lab is out of control no more! See Video Below!

A few months after getting our lab/retriever, Ginger, daily life started to become stressful. The kids didn’t want to play with the her because she would bite at them and knock them over, and my husband refused to walk her anymore because she pulled so hard on the leash even an anti pull harness didn’t work. Ginger was relentlessly; she went after anything that moved, cat,s birds, leaves ect., she would eat everything she looked at, including large rocks. Life was just crazy!

We tried a trainer that taught us how to get her to sit but she wouldn’t stay. It got to the point where her day was spent getting yelled at or locked away in a kennel because we couldn’t take her anywhere or do anything with her. I was very skeptical that training would do anything to change her hyper personality but the only other option was to give her away, so after some research and asking around, we found Camellia. Immediately after beginning training I could see changes in Ginger. A 20 minute session had her panting exhausted, but she LOVED it and I was enjoying spending that time with her. Whenever I had questions Camellia quickly responded and gave advice that actually worked! After hitting a rough spot with some behaviors we weren’t sure how to deal with, we sent Ginger away with Camellia for a 5 day board and train. You wouldn’t think that much would change in 5 days, but it has tremendously!

Now my family could not be happier because life is way less stressful for everyone, including Ginger. She is actually now a part of our family, not an annoyance. I am able to take her out with confidence and my kids are begging to do stuff with her. She has become something I am proud of, not something I am apologizing for when I have guests over.

I would completely recommend Camellia as a trainer to anyone who is possibly hitting their breaking point or who wants to avoid that in their future. Her level of knowledge of dogs and their behaviors is exceptional. We are so pleased and content in knowing that no matter what challenges we come up against, Camellia will be there to guide us through it.

Children’s Bite Prevention Seminars

February 14, 2017 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Children’s Bite Prevention Seminar with Professional Dog Trainer,
Camellia Saunderson, and Buddy the tripod

Dogs are largely misunderstood by humans, especially children. To a dog, biting is a normal way of communicating when nothing else has worked. Too often we hear that a dog has bitten a person ‘out of nowhere,’ when more often than not, we have simply failed to read the dog’s signs of discomfort before it happened.

Our children’s bite prevention seminars focus on fun, informative, and interactive activities to teach children how to read a dog’s body language and warning signs, as well as learn how to properly interact with family and strange dogs.

During the presentation we discuss the Do’s and Don’ts of bite prevention, body language and communication, the Yellow Ribbon Campaign, how to greet a strange dog with an owner (WAIT), and how to avoid a strange dog without an owner (Be A Tree). Children get to practice their new knowledge with a fun interactive lesson with my child-friendly dog Buddy and hear the story of how he lost his leg, as a cautionary tale.

Sessions last 30 minutes, to an hour, depending on the number of children. Every child leaves with essential knowledge, take-home information on everything we discussed during our session, and a bite prevention word search.

Interested in finding out more about what we have to offer? Contact us directly at camellias@upk9.ca or find a trainer near you by clicking here. Think your child’s school or community program could benefit from an opportunity like this? Have them contact us to book a seminar asap! Your child’s safety depends on it.

Adventures in Reactive Dog Encounters Part 1

May 8, 2016 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

Introduction: The purpose of this blog series is not to judge, but to educate!

I learned long ago that most reactive dog owners do not always appreciate a stranger in passing giving them reactive dog advice about their loved ones. More often than not, people tend to take it personally when you point out their dog’s flaws, rather than as a gesture of good will. These days, I wait for people to come to me before I offer my thoughts and advice, but with the wonderful world of the anonymous web, what better way to spread some much needed knowledge than through stories of my adventures in encountering reactive dogs and the things that their owners could be doing differently to help. So here they are, one by one, for your education.

Adventures in Reactive Dog Encounters Part 1: Little Dog Syndrome

It’s a beautiful day, one of the first of the season, and that always means that the dogs are out in full bloom, including mine! Hiking is one of the many ways that we exercise our bodies and having off leash control means that I have more opportunities to exercise their brains as well. On hiking trails, the dogs can run, sniff, and tire themselves out, but when other dogs are heard or seen in the distance, I can recall them back with ease and put them into an off leash heel until we pass the strange dogs politely.

On this day in particular, we came across a number of dogs of varying breeds and personalities, and not once did I have to worry about my dogs’ safety, thanks to their training and ability to ignore distractions. Yes, you read that correctly, I worry about my pitbulls’ safety around other dogs, because despite what many people think and despite their breed, they are more friendly and well behaved than most other dogs out there, but I digress. One pack in particular that we came across consisted of two humans and two small breed dogs. As soon as the owners saw my two medium sized, completely relaxed dogs coming their way, they picked both dogs up into their arms where they were held until we were gone; the moment the dog was picked up, loud aggressive barking began and continued long after we had passed.

Could the humans’ response have been based out of fear over breed? Maybe, it is certainly something that we have experienced many times in the past. Could it have been out of fear that their reactive dog might start something with a larger dog that could cause harm to him? Most likely. A logical response if you ask any unbiased bystander; pick the smaller reactive dog up to save everyone a lot of hassle and potential vet bills. Unfortunately, what the owners are probably unaware of, is that they may actually be causing more harm than good!

First, by picking up a smaller dog, a child, or anything of that matter, whether it is into your arms or up over your head, you are drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Many dogs are used to avoiding a small barking dog, but a dog up in the air is rare and interesting, worth checking out at the very least, possibly even jumping up to get a better sniff. Now pick up a smaller dog around a prey driven, controlling, or reactive dog, and that dog might be more likely to jump up and nip or bite. The better idea would be to leave the dog on the ground, ask the strange dog’s owners if their dogs are friendly, particularly with small reactive dogs, and try blocking that dog from your own. If your dogs are likely to run at other dogs, they should be on leash until taught some impulse control.

Next, every time you pick up your smaller reactive dog and another dog, or person, passes by, your little dog has just ‘won’ and their reactive behavior has inadvertently been reinforced. The dog thinks, ‘dog approaches, I get picked up making me feel bigger and safer, I bark, dog passes, barking successful, I am safe, my pack is safe, next time I will bark again and my pack will be safe.’ Cue next dog on the trail and the cycle continues; ‘dog approaches, I get picked up, I bark, maybe I bark louder because it takes longer for dog to approach, dog passes, barking successful, we are safe, next time I will bark longer and louder and my pack will be safe’. Get the picture? It’s a vicious cycle that might be stopped by simply not picking up the dog. Will this stop the reactivity all together? Likely not, but it will stop reinforcing it, making it worse.

Also, when you hold your dog while they are barking, pet them, and tell them, ‘it will be ok, the strange dog will pass’, your dog hears, ‘it’s ok, good job, keep barking’, which reinforces the behavior even more. So remember to keep four legs on the floor at all times, and you will stop reinforcing Little Dog Syndrome, then book a free consultation with me to find out how I can help address your dog’s reactivity and need to bark at passersby.
