What do you do when your dog loves to shop? LOL. kidding.

Im doing a little maintenance work with my dog to retrieve tings in to the shopping cart. Thats a big service.

Pushing the shopping cart is not one of hs jobs that is required, I trained him to do this for extra fun and keep him sharp.

Behaviours you need is a trained retrieve to a box or cart. Its not hard at all once you have the foundation.

Keep an eye out for my soon to come Trained Retrieve Video Program in Dog Training Genesis. Launching Summer 2017

Lazy Dog Trainer III, Duke Ferguson Obedience With 5 Dogs & A Four Wheeler

April 11, 2017 By Duke Ferguson 1 Comment

Lazy Dog Trainer lll, Duke Ferguson Obedience With 5 Dogs & A Four Wheeler

Having fun with your dog and burning energy off is super easy when you have them obedience trained properly.

Dogs are happy and free to run while still being safe and under control.

Since a trained dog is a joy to be around the obedience is super easy and stress free to maintain during fun outings.

Once you have your dog trained life is great!!!

Some of the dogs in this video were due to be put to sleep by so called Animal Behaviourist Veterinarians until Duke Ferguson stepped in and adopted them.

After some training it turns out these dogs were some of the best dogs ever to be with.

Here is some maintenance training and exercise that can be done while riding your quad. Watch how fast they can go.

Drive Safe!!!

Stress and Your Dog in Training

March 6, 2017 By Duke Ferguson 3 Comments

I have read a lot of commentary on stress during dog training; the short version is that there are people out there who don’t believe that a dog should be stressed out for training to be effective or humane, and that stress will damage the relationship between human and canine. While I agree that stress indicators such as panting, yawning, and stretching should be carefully considered during training, I completely disagree that they should always be avoided. If your dog never feels stressed, they will never learn how to handle stress. The fact is that stress is a natural response and there is such a thing as healthy stress; it simply means your dog is learning. It is our job to guide our dogs through stressful situations, which is why we teach the dog a marker system (good, break, no). When you put pressure on a dog, which comes in all forms (raising your voice, pulling on the leash, manipulating your body language, giving stimulation on an e-collar, and much, much more) your dog will feel stress. If you have done an effective job teaching your dog a marker system, you can work them through that stress, which builds confidence in your dog and builds their trust in you as their leader. Once you have done this with enough repetition, your dog will no longer feel stress in that situation.

Every new environment you take your dog into, even something as simple as a new quiet park you discovered down the road with no distractions, your dog is going to exhibit some level of stress. Now every dog is different, more confident dogs with strong leaders will exhibit less, while insecure dogs with owners who believe that dogs should have freedom without consequence, structure, or guidance, will exhibit a higher level of stress. The more new environments you take your dog into, the less stressed your dog will be going into new places. So you might have guessed that with a proper relationship, obedience, food drive, and good communication using a marker system, the more distractions you put your dog into with the expectation that they will focus on you, the less stress they will exhibit in distractions, the less likely they will have reactivity and social issues, and the more balanced they will be in the long run. Now, it is a little more complex than just taking them places and having expectations, as reliable obedience, good timing, consistency, and motivation all play key factors in your rate of success, but when all of these things have been taken into account, putting stress on your dog in the right way is absolutely acceptable and is the only way that you will help your dog move forward in their training.

Yes, for obedience training to be effective and fun, minimal stress is encouraged, which is why we use low distraction environments to begin our training process. For behavioral modification to be effective, stress is as important as positive motivation, the key is to know how to read your dog’s stress indicators and to know when enough is enough, always ensuring you end on a good note with success.

The Stress in Dog Training
Humans find ways to cope with stress, like yoga and meditation. So why not teach your dog how to cope with stress too? They will be happier and healthier for it.

Before deciding which trainer you would like to work with, as they can be a dime a dozen, really think about the behaviors you would like to modify in your dog. If you need help getting your dog to focus in a distracting environment, anything outside the home or controlled setting, than a basic obedience trainer may not be able to give you the results you are looking for. Instead, find a trainer who specializes in DOG behavior modification outside the home in real life situations; one who will be able to teach you how to work your dog through stressful situations, because lets be honest, LIFE IS STRESSFUL!

Children’s Bite Prevention Seminars

Children’s Bite Prevention Seminar with Professional Dog Trainer,
Camellia Saunderson, and Buddy the tripod

Dogs are largely misunderstood by humans, especially children. To a dog, biting is a normal way of communicating when nothing else has worked. Too often we hear that a dog has bitten a person ‘out of nowhere,’ when more often than not, we have simply failed to read the dog’s signs of discomfort before it happened.
16652003_10155827077744937_18784224_n

Our children’s bite prevention seminars focus on fun, informative, and interactive activities to teach children how to read a dog’s body language and warning signs, as well as learn how to properly interact with family and strange dogs.

During the presentation we discuss the Do’s and Don’ts of bite prevention, body language and communication, the Yellow Ribbon Campaign, how to greet a strange dog with an owner (WAIT), and how to avoid a strange dog without an owner (Be A Tree). Children get to practice their new knowledge with a fun interactive lesson with my child-friendly dog Buddy and hear the story of how he lost his leg, as a cautionary tale.

Sessions last 30 minutes, to an hour, depending on the number of children. Every child leaves with essential knowledge, take-home information on everything we discussed during our session, and a bite prevention word search.

Interested in finding out more about what we have to offer? Contact us directly at camellias@upk9.ca or find a trainer near you by clicking here. Think your child’s school or community program could benefit from an opportunity like this? Have them contact us to book a seminar asap! Your child’s safety depends on it.

Lazy Dog Trainer II, The EAZY Way To Stop A Dog From Attacking The Vacuum

January 29, 2017 By Duke Ferguson Leave a Comment

There are many different ways to accomplish things in training. There are many different ways to teach a dog basic commands, communicate with them, reward them, correct them, etc. Every dog is different so there isn’t a one size fits all approach to dog training. While most dog trainers become systematic in the way they approach things, the good ones know that not everything works for every dog and sometimes you have to get creative.

The creative part is what drives me in my training. Most of my training is very systematic because the system I follow works and it works very well – most of the time. The situations where something isn’t the best solution for a dog is what keeps dog training exciting for me. But sometimes I can be lazy. What you are about to see is one of those days. The good news is that sometimes you can be lazy and creative. In this video, I discovered a completely hands off approach to getting a dog to be OK around a vacuum. There is nothing better than witnessing complete success while sitting on your butt!

For this “hands off” approach to be successful your dog needs ignition.  When the dog is hungry,  food motivated and willing to work it becomes active. A dog with ignition lets you become a lazy dog trainer because the dog does all the work. If you don’t have ignition then this will not work.
