Remember to bring regular meals and rewards of high value like treats and a favourite toy.

The workshop may be called  “The Art of Attention” and the group focus exercise on day two is just one fun helpful thing we do to get serious attention and control when needed for safety and sanity reasons…BUT…it’s not just about having the dog look at you.   This workshop is so much more than that.
  • It’s teaching you a complete system that creates harmony, clear communication, ignition, hope and a love for all behaviours the dog is to perform for you.
  • It’s about you learning to successfully condition the dog to willingly and eagerly pay attention to you and what you want the dog to do while giving you heart and soul.
  • It’s about learning to condition automatic responses and having the dog think and make wise choices.
  • It’s teaching you a powerful system that enables you to get the most from your dog with the least amount of effort. This system is the reason I named a series of  You Tube videos on Unleashed Potential K9 TV “The Lazy Dog Trainer”.
  • It’s about teaching you how to build an amazing relationship between you and your dog.
  • It’s about having life changing experiences, ah-ha moments, taking the system home and implementing it in daily life.

What will you be Learning at the Art of Attention Workshop?

  • Understand why dogs do what they do, how they do it and what we need to do about it to help the dog find its advantage.
  • Learn the NePoPo® recipe and tools used.
  • Understand clear communication and establishing it with the dog.
  • 3 keys of training and shaping behaviours.
  • Pros & cons of positive training.  Pros and cons of using pressure, corrections and punishment.
  • Charging marks, free shaping vs luring and hands-on training exercises with people and then dogs.
  • E-collar conditioning and working hands on with people then dogs.
  • Understanding behaviours as well as how to shape and modify them.
  • One-on-one work with your dog and me.
  • Group work adding distractions.

I fully understand that all people & dogs who are attending will have different levels of experience, different behaviour issues and different goals. I will be sure to work at everyone’s individual level and adjust the training recipe according to each persons and dogs needs.

In past workshops I have trained everything from deaf dogs, blind dogs, children and dogs, older dogs, puppies, people in wheelchairs and those who have other disabilities.

The 3 Keys To Successfully Training Your Dog

November 26, 2018 By Guy Lapierre Leave a Comment

The 3 Keys To Successfully Training Your Dog

I meet with several people each week to discuss their dog’s problems and needs. Most of them are trying very hard to help their dogs and end up standing in front of me because they are frustrated that they can’t make any progress with their dog’s issue – whatever they may be. As I said, in most cases it isn’t for a lack of trying or effort on their part and many have invested in previous training, read many books, and watched countless videos on the internet seeking help. So as they stand in front of me, often desperate and beginning to believe their dog is not trainable, I see the common theme once again. Communication.

Off Leash Freedom
Off leash and social, with recall.

Communication is the foundation that needs to be in place before anything can really take place. If the dog doesn’t understand the conversation with you, you will have little to no success. If you signed up for a course and the course outline and classes were in a foreign language, how would you do? You may be able to figure out a little bit of what is going on by being there but you wouldn’t be able to truly understand in any depth and it would be a very confusing and frustrating process. That is what most dogs are experiencing that I see. They have no clear expectations, the course outline, and they don’t understand what is being said, the course content.

So how do dog’s communicate? They communicate through their senses. You can use a dog’s scent to get attention and engagement in the conversation – especially when using food in the training. Dog’s primarily use body language (sight) to communicate. Their tale, ears, body, paws, mouth, eyes, and even their fur are used to send a message to whoever is watching. They use tones (sound) by letting out a growl, bark, or whine to whoever is listening. Lastly, they are very physical animals so touch often comes into the conversation in the form of affection or physical warnings or corrections. Of course, we can communicate to them using these very same senses to have a conversation with our dog that they understand. They are a different species and how they communicate is not the same as a human. Dogs learn through association and repetition so we have to take the time to teach and give meaning to our communication. Without clear communication the dog will have limited understanding in the process.

So let’s discuss the three keys to successfully training a dog now that you know it must first start with clear communication. The three keys are timing, consistency, and motivation.

  • Timing: Dogs live in the moment and to effectively communicate with them you have to do so in that very moment. The window of opportunity is about one second long. That may sound like it would be difficult to achieve but it isn’t. With a little practice and a good communication system, you can learn to be timely with your dog and it will be make you more observant of your dog so that you can achieve this critical piece of the conversation. The analogy I always use to illustrate this is to get people to think about how movies used to be made up of a series of pictures. If each picture was one second apart then that is how your dog takes the world in – a snapshot one second at a time. You have to communicate inside the snapshot. If you get the snapshots before or after the appropriate one the time is off. When your timing is right, it is extremely effective.
  • Consistency: You have to be consistent. Dogs don’t do well with grey area. The process of learning needs to be black and white and consistent. You always have to be in a position to teach and if you can’t be, the dog needs to be in an environment where they are not able to make decisions without your guidance. This needs to be the case until your teaching has produced a dog that consistently makes the desired decisions. At that point, they will not need your influence to make the correct one anymore.
  • Motivation: A dog needs to be motivated to do or not do. You can motivate a dog to do more of something if there is something in it for them. That could be to acquire something they want or avoid something they don’t. You can motivate a dog to not do something by making it consequential. That could be an aversive consequence for a behaviour or the consequential removal of something they wish to have.

Pack WalkWhen you learn to effectively communicate with your dog in a clear, consistent manner and motivate them in the process you will have success. It never fails.

Out of Control Lab, Ginger- Testimonial

November 3, 2017 By Duke Ferguson 1 Comment

Thank You Unleashed Potential The Valley!! Ginger the lab is out of control no more! See Video Below!

A few months after getting our lab/retriever, Ginger, daily life started to become stressful. The kids didn’t want to play with the her because she would bite at them and knock them over, and my husband refused to walk her anymore because she pulled so hard on the leash even an anti pull harness didn’t work. Ginger was relentlessly; she went after anything that moved, cat,s birds, leaves ect., she would eat everything she looked at, including large rocks. Life was just crazy!

We tried a trainer that taught us how to get her to sit but she wouldn’t stay. It got to the point where her day was spent getting yelled at or locked away in a kennel because we couldn’t take her anywhere or do anything with her. I was very skeptical that training would do anything to change her hyper personality but the only other option was to give her away, so after some research and asking around, we found Camellia. Immediately after beginning training I could see changes in Ginger. A 20 minute session had her panting exhausted, but she LOVED it and I was enjoying spending that time with her. Whenever I had questions Camellia quickly responded and gave advice that actually worked! After hitting a rough spot with some behaviors we weren’t sure how to deal with, we sent Ginger away with Camellia for a 5 day board and train. You wouldn’t think that much would change in 5 days, but it has tremendously!

Now my family could not be happier because life is way less stressful for everyone, including Ginger. She is actually now a part of our family, not an annoyance. I am able to take her out with confidence and my kids are begging to do stuff with her. She has become something I am proud of, not something I am apologizing for when I have guests over.

I would completely recommend Camellia as a trainer to anyone who is possibly hitting their breaking point or who wants to avoid that in their future. Her level of knowledge of dogs and their behaviors is exceptional. We are so pleased and content in knowing that no matter what challenges we come up against, Camellia will be there to guide us through it.

Dog VS Squirrel / Recall With Distractions

October 5, 2017 By Duke Ferguson 1 Comment

Do you have trouble getting your dog to come when called? If you are going to let your dog off leash then for safety and sanity reasons you should have your dog trained with a rock solid recall!

Seriously, I see people every day letting their dogs off leash and have no control, only to have the dog chase a car or passer by and get hit by a car.

Truth is it’s actually easy to teach a recall. Any breed, any size, any age, any dog can be trained to come when called… EVEN Deaf dogs!

Check out this video of Matrix VS the Squirrel!

What if the thing triggering you most isn't here to punish you, but to teach you?
